These are all really nice paintings, Donna, even if you do consider them studies. When you are doing this kind of study do you paint primarily what you see or do you also take the time to arrange the composition while you are on site? I guess I'm wondering what is more important if time is limited - correct colors or a comp that might work better for a larger painting.

Hi Donna. I try to arrange stuff. In the top two scenes nature had provided some Pine and Oak all mixed up in the distance. I decided to concentrate on the more dominant looking Pine trees and cut out the Oak.

The rest of the scenes I did not think needed to be arranged or changed much, however on the big rock on the river scene I did move the Scotch Bloom over to include, but that was a minor shift.

I am trying to always think first about composition and what might work. If I do not think about that first, my painting fails even if it is a study. At least that is what I blame the failures on and not a failure of the artist. Gotta have a scapegoat
