Viento State Park

We tried beating the heat by heading west and getting out at first light.  It worked for a short time, and the temperature was a bit cooler, but the humidity was much higher.  It was a fun day with Buckley and the Windsurfer.  Viento is one of my favorite places, I have painted here many times.  The finished painting is not ready for prime time (posting here) it may need a bit of tweaking....... and then I will show......

Okay, I admit, oil is better than pastel.  I know, I know, my pastel friends are not going to want to hear that, but it is true.  One can get the nuances of color with oil, whereas pastel is always a compromise.  Try as hard as you can in getting the hills to be a more blue violet with some grayed down color is hard work in pastel.  With a brush voila!  It is done.

I still love pastel.....

Learning to paint with oils sounds very tempting, Donna. I admit that I would like to push piles of thick paint around! Just don't pack up your pastels, OK? You do such beautiful work with them.

Hi Donna! Yes, I do love pastel. I also want to master oil. I can see the day that I can choose to use oil or pastel based on the idea that I want to express that day. Elizabeth Mowry does both pastel and oil as do Richard McKinley and Albert Handel. I might be in good company, if I can master both.
