Inspiration Demystified and Moments of Grace III

Moments of Grace III - SOLD

The inspiration for this painting came about while I was wandering around taking fall photos and wondering what I would find. Then, suddenly as I walked behind these trees they became backlit and I was swept away by the thought of a stained glass window, and inspiration was born.

Inspiration for paintings comes upon me in odd moments and is unpredictable. My job is to be ready. Below is a quote by Steven Pressfield from his book "theWARofART."

A pro views her work as craft, not art. Not because she believes art is devoid of a mystical dimension. On the contrary. She understands that all creative endeavor is holy, but she doesn't dwell on it. she knows if she thinks about that too much, it will paralyze her. So she concentrates on technique. The professional masters how, and leaves what and why to the gods. She doesn't wait for inspiration, she acts in the anticipation of its apparition. The professional is acutely aware of the intangibles that go into inspiration. Out of respect for them, she lets them work. She grants them their sphere while she
concentrates on hers.

The sign of the amateur is overglorification of and preoccupation with the mystery.

The professional shuts up. She doesn't talk about it. She does her work.

More thoughts that I really can relate to: thanks Donna! I am so afraid of the concept of overglorification, I just never could assign a word to that feeling. It seems there is a fine line between painting the beauty that you experience and making something beautiful look cheap.
